About This Book
Set in the cold, remote landscape of northern Minnesota, this exciting novel follows 12-year-old Seth on a harrowing, three-day, unplanned adventure. Devastated by his first kill — a rabbit that he has shot without the permission of his game-warden stepfather — Seth stumbles on a gang of poachers slaughtering a moose cow. Seth is determined to save the moose calf, but afraid to involve his stepfather; but when the poachers trap him and his friend Matt in an abandoned mine, he knows he should have gone for help. Author Mary Casanova gives Seth's predicament the serious attention it deserves, and deftly fills in the background that makes the boy a believable character. Seth has a life even when he's not getting himself into big trouble like this. Readers will identify with his worries about his mother's pregnancy and his place in the family, as well as with his questions and fears about his natural father. On many levels, this fast-paced, many-layered story is sure to hold the interest of middle-grade readers.
